In May 2005 Chloe was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. She was six years old. Since that time she has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment that has twice caused her to lose her hair and endure many, many nasty side effects. To date she has had surgery to insert a central line into her chest to take bloods and administer chemotherapy, seven bone marrow aspirates, sixteen lumbar puctures, over 115 blood tests( a needle every week, sometimes twice in a week and sometimes twice in one day !), twenty one general anaesthetics, nine blood transfusions, two platelet transfusions, many hospital admissions for intravenous antibiotics to fight infections, swallowed in excess of 2500 chemotherapy tablets and over 100 syringefuls of liquid chemotherapy. These are just some of the facts and figures - there are plenty more!
Despite everything that she has endured she has been determined to live life and you only have to look at that smile to believe that! Everyone who knows Chloe is amazed by her bravery and spirit. The last time Chloe took part in the Race for Life it was five weeks after she had been diagnosed and she was extremely ill. Despite that she was absolutely determined to take part ,as she was doing it for her nannie Parrish, who had passed away from breast cancer the previous year. She loved her nannie so much and did not want to let her down, but really she was far too ill to do it. Despite this she insisted, but only 1km in she collapsed and could no longer walk. She refused to get in the ambulance and give up and so we carried her the other 4km to the finish line. It was very traumatic but typical Chloe. She has faced everything that living with cancer has brought her with a stubborn determination. She is often in pain and feeling unwell, but it is only at home that she will give in to it and show how badly she is feeling.
Hopefully, this time round will be a better experience and, as Chloe has been asked by Cancer Research UK to be their guest of honour on the day and start the race, it will also be very exciting! Chloe's Team will definitely be doing a slow walk as this is a big distance for Chloe but hope you will feel able to sponsor her or even take part yourself.
