Let us tell you a bit about Gabriel.
On 25 July 2008, within weeks of his baby sister being born, little Gabriel was diagnosed with having an aggressive and highly malignant brain tumour which had already spread to his spine. It was diagnosed as being an Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumour and his parents were given the most dreadful prognosis that it was untreatable. On 7 August 2008, Gabriel was taken home with no hope of a cure, his parents having been told he had months, at most,to live. He was just 2 years and 4 months old.
Gabriel had other ideas though and he refused to give up his fight. The doctors were so impressed with him that after three months of palliative treatment they arranged for him to have an MRI scan. They were thrilled with the results and it was decided that he needed to be given a chance to survive and experimental and extremely aggressive treatment was offered and accepted.
Gabriel has just completed his chemotherapy which was followed by a stem cell transplant. It has been a hard battle for him and on 27 April 2009 his MRI scan showed no evidence of disease. He is currently undertaking maintenance chemotherapy and will be scanned every 4 months.
Gabriel's Girls is a team comprising Gabriel's mummy, nonna, auntie, and mummy's friends. Everyone in the team cares deeply about Gabriel and want to raise as much money as possible to reduce the number of children who have such horrific battles to face.
The race falls on the one year anniversary weekend of Gabriel's diagnosis.
