Hi Everyone,
It's that time of year again when the annual begging email is sent to you all!!
In Jan 2008 my close friend (age 29) was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer (sarcoma). She was given the prognosis of 9 months. Soon after, she broke her arm and there was concern that the cancer may have spread to the bone. Because sarcomas are not responsive to traditional chemo the outlook was bleak. Recently she has been part of a medical trial of a new chemo drug called yondelis which is not yet licensed and the good news is that is has been restricting the growth of the sarcoma. However, over xmas my friend had a sore leg and now they have discovered that infact the cancer has spread to the brain (which is rare for a sarcoma to do).... and the normal scans she had been getting didn't include the brain. She is now undergoing radiotherapy to the brain in order to shrink the tumour and if all goes to plan she will be back on the yondelis in no time.
Despite this, she is positive in her outlook and an excellent example to us all. She is the most determined, resolute and resilient person I know.
Last year a group of my friends 'the langtoun ladies'set out on a campaign to raise money for cancer research (specifically sarcoma UK), by participating in the race for life. We begged for sponsorship and held a charity fundraising event.. which was an amazing night. In total we raised over £8000.00 and were the top fundraisers for our series. We hope to achieve this again in 2010.
I am asking you to donate online..... every penny counts. Drugs like yondelis would not be available to our friends and family without your support..... one dose of yondelis costs £8000.00 which puts things into perspective.
Please please support this great cause because together we can beat cancer.
ps remember to gift aid it if you pay uk tax!
